Good News or Bad News?

NikonUSA today launched a new "Nikon Z Lens Trade Up Event," where NikonUSA gives dealers a bonus to pass on to you for any camera or lens you trade in when buying a Z lens. The lenses that are eligible:

  • US$100 bonus — 14-24mm f/2.8 S, 14-30mm f/4 S, 20mm f/1.8 S, 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR, 28-75mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.8 S, 40mm f/2, 50mm f/1.2 S, 50mm f/1.8 S, 85mm f/1.8 S
  • US$200 bonus — 24-70mm f/2.8 S, 70-200mm f/2.8 S

The reason for my headline is this: while it's nice to get a bonus on your trade in, all the trade-in activity that's happening already is already lowering trade in values, and all NikonUSA is doing is encouraging that. Moreover, for those trading in gear for something other than those 12 lenses, the lowering of trade in values wouldn't be welcomed at all.

This promo started today and lasts through October 2nd.
