Mastering Nikon JPEGs helps you understand and master how to get great looking JPEG images out of your Nikon camera, no matter which one.

Ever since Nikon introduced EXPEED in 2007 with the D3, they've used the same fundamental hardware algorithms within that chip to produce image files. EXPEED introduced the concept of Picture Controls, and the amazing thing is that if you set two Nikon cameras exactly the same, you get the same exact results. We're now on EXPEED7, but the same excellent image-producing system is still present, it's just been extended a bit with some new Picture Controls and parameters. Z System cameras are all .NP3 cameras (third generation Picture Controls), with the Z9 generation beginning with the Z6III adding something called a Flexible Picture Control. These differences are all documented in Mastering Nikon JPEGs, as are the two previous generations.

The goal of this book is get you to the point where you can create consistently great JPEG images with your Nikon camera. Images that don't need post processing, and which can be held up as perfect representations of your conception. That means getting tonality, color, and style exactly right as you're taking photographs.

Yes, that also means you need a structure to get those decisions right, and this book will step you through that. And yes, you have to make the decisions, not the camera, which means you need to understand what you're attempting and sometimes step in and take control. Don't panic. That's not as tough as it sounds. You'll note that I used three words in the previous paragraph (tonality, color, and style). Yep, it's a three-step process, and sometimes you can let the camera do the heavy lifting on the first two. But you need to know when you don't want that to happen, and what to do about it.

The bulk of the book centers around style, though. My premise is that you want your photographs to be your photographs, so much of the book centers on things about Picture Controls that will impact that. Moreover, I'll show you how to create your own Picture Controls and provide examples of what that might accomplish.

Despite being a tight 344 pages long, Mastering Nikon JPEGs covers a lot of ground:

  • Z50II, Z5II, Z6III, Z8, Z9, and Zf users have high frame rates with Pre-release capture. While that's a great feature, it only produces JPEGs. Which means you absolutely need to know how to master JPEGs.
  • Z50II, Z5II, Z6III, and Zf users have the ability to download "Recipes" to the camera, which are really just more elaborate Picture Controls. But did you know that you can create your own? This book will show you how.
  • The Z7II introduced Portrait impression balance. Do you know what that does and how it will impact your JPEG images? You should if you're photographing people.
  • Did you realize that pretty much all the Picture Controls have a toe and shoulder in their tonality, much like film did? Perhaps not as pronounced, but it's there, and you should be aware of it.

These things and many more are packed into Mastering Nikon JPEGs. Moreover, this is an approachable, readable book that builds your knowledge with each subsequent chapter. By the time you finish the book, you should be a master of your JPEG images, producing exactly the results you want by applying the knowledge you learned along the way.

We provide both an ePub and PDF file for the book, so it should be readable on virtually any device with a screen.

Mastering Nikon JPEGs is a must-own for virtually any Nikon camera user. There simply isn't any other work out there that comes close to touching the detail, usefulness, or intent of this work.
