Mastering Nikon Customization helps you understand and master how to speed up and more directly control your Nikon Z System camera. Given that there are now 100's of Menu Items each with many options, you don't want to be navigating that labyrinth when a photographic situation is changing spontaneously in front of you. Photos are moments in time. Make sure that you aren't fiddling with settings when those moments occur.

So what exactly are customizations? All Z System cameras have several customization abilities. On the Mode dial cameras you have user settings (U1, U2, U3). On the Z8 and Z9 you have Banks. All the Z System cameras have an i button that leads to a grid of "quick menu" items that you can change. Camera body and lens buttons and dials can be programmed with specific (different) functions. You can even make your own menu system using MY MENU

Nikon hasn't exactly given you a structure in which to understand all that. That's important, since you can put the same function on a button, in the i button menu, in your user settings/Banks, or on your MY MENU. Nikon even duplicates some buttons in the i button menu. Why? One of things you'll take away from this book is that a little prioritization goes a long way. Moreover, Nikon hasn't done a great job of that prioritization for you.

While I make a lot of customization suggestions in the book, don't expect to "just download a settings file" and be done. Customization is personal. The customizations I use on my Z9 might not work for you, partly because you might have a Z7II instead and don't photograph sports ;~).

Despite being a very slim 170 pages long in it's current form, Mastering Nikon Customizations covers a lot of ground:

  • As noted above, user settings (U1U2U3), Banks, i button menus, and camera body and lens buttons and dials are all covered. Specifically with the things you can program a button to, I go into deeper detail about why you might (or might not) want to use each possible function than I do in my Complete Guides.
  • I split the cameras into two overall groups (original and Z9 generation), but also dials (Zf, Zfc), Mode dial (Z30, Z50, Z50II, Z5, Z5II, Z6, Z6II, Z6III, Z7, Z7II, and Banks (Z8, Z9) cameras. Each of those groupings has a different set of things that can be customized. If you use more than one Nikon Z System camera, it's important to understand those differences.
  • Yes, I describe a number of common customizations and the reason why some photographers use those. But I also give you homework assignments so that you can figure out where you're using (or not using) the default (or your current) customizations.

These things and many more are packed into Mastering Nikon Customization. Moreover, this is an approachable, readable book that builds your knowledge with each subsequent chapter. By the time you finish the book, you should be a master of your camera's customization, producing exactly the results you want by applying the knowledge you learned along the way.

We provide both an ePub and PDF file for the book, so it should be readable on virtually any device with a screen.

Mastering Nikon Customization is a must-own for virtually any Nikon Z System camera user (I won't be disappointed if Zfc users don't buy it, though, as there's not a lot to customize on that camera). There simply isn't any other work out there that comes close to touching the detail, usefulness, or intent of this work.
